Japanese media outlets have been floating rumors that Sony Bank, the financial arm spun out from the broader Sony Group, is planning to launch a U.S.-dollar-backed stablecoin. According to sources cited by these portals, the stablecoin could start rolling out to U.S. customers as early as fiscal year 2026 and will be used within PlayStation, Crunchyroll, and other digital entertainment platforms.

The stablecoin will be pegged 1:1 with the dollar and is intended to function as a dedicated payment method for Sony’s digital content. The stablecoin will act as an alternative to traditional credit card transactions that are currently widely accepted.

How will this stablecoin work?

Although Sony Bank has not made any official public comments, earlier this year, the bank acknowledged that digital assets and blockchain-based services are becoming increasingly important to its evolving business strategy. Sony may need to issue this stablecoin under a planned U.S. subsidiary, one that has a banking license.

Meanwhile, they have teamed up with Bastion, a U.S.-based stablecoin infrastructure provider, to handle custody, compliance, and blockchain settlements. Under the partnership, Sony Bank will extend stablecoin services to group companies, with Bastion overseeing issuance, reserve management, and custody at scale, a blog post by Bastion read.

“Sony’s decision to partner with Bastion is a powerful endorsement of our mission to build the infrastructure for a stablecoin-powered future, and a positive indication for enterprise adoption of stablecoins. Together, Bastion and Sony Bank are laying the groundwork for a more programmable, efficient and cohesive global financial system,” said Nassim Eddequiouaq, CEO of Bastion.

Going beyond subscription

Once live, the stablecoin would function like a digital wallet currency. It will allow users to pay for PlayStation games, renew Crunchyroll or streaming subscriptions, and purchase in-game items using Sony’s in-house digital token. While gaming and anime payments are the initial use cases, the planned stablecoin could be integrated into the company’s larger ecosystem that connects fan communities, digital content, and blockchain-powered experiences.
