President Donald Trump says he has struck a deal with nearly all of the Republican lawmakers who had blocked three key cryptocurrency bills, paving the way for a re-vote in the House this week.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced he met with 11 of the 12 GOP representatives who voted against advancing the legislation, and secured their commitment to support the measures in the upcoming vote.
Trump wrote:
“I am in the Oval Office with 11 of the 12 Congressmen/women necessary to pass the GENIUS Act and, after a short discussion, they have all agreed to vote tomorrow morning in favor of the Rule.”
The procedural vote to advance the bills as part of the GOP’s so-called “Crypto Week” was shelved on Tuesday after 13 Republican lawmakers withdrew support.
The group demanded stronger language banning a central bank digital currency (CBDC) as a condition for their votes.
At the heart of the standoff was the GENIUS Act, which seeks to regulate stablecoins. Several GOP members also wanted the bill combined with the Anti-CBDC Surveillance Act, which explicitly bans a Federal Reserve-issued CBDC, and the CLARITY Act, which outlines broader crypto market regulations.
“We cannot pass the GENIUS Act without banning CBDCs,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said in a post on X, explaining her opposition.
Meanwhile Rep. Andy Biggs added that he feared the GENIUS Act could open the door to a layered CBDC framework, and called for an open amendment process.
“House leadership must allow an open amendment process so members can freely debate and improve the bill,” he said.
Trump previously issued an executive order in January barring the Fed from developing a CBDC. While some critics argue the GENIUS Act doesn’t go far enough, supporters note that the bill prohibits the Fed from offering retail services directly to consumers, effectively blocking CBDCs.
House Speaker Mike Johnson thanked Trump for intervening.
“I’m thankful for President Trump getting involved tonight to ensure that we can pass the GENIUS Act tomorrow,” Johnson posted on X.
The House is scheduled to reconvene Wednesday morning for debate and additional legislative business.
