Texas Bitcoin Mining Facility Residents Sick of Noise

A new video by the nonprofit newsroom More Perfect Union is shedding light on the impact of a large Texas Bitcoin mining operation, where residents say nonstop noise has left them suffering from serious health issues.

Located in an unincorporated area of Hood County, just outside Granbury a town southwest of Dallas, the 300-megawatt crypto mining facility operated by MARA Holdings (formerly Marathon Digital) has become the source of growing concern among locals.

In interviews captured in the video, residents describe persistent, low-frequency noise that some claim is causing headaches, hospital visits, and mental distress.

“Every family here is sick,” one resident told reporter Dan Lieberman, as the mining operation’s hum echoed in the background. “It never goes away. Headaches never go away.”

The facility was originally developed by Compute North in 2022 before the company filed for bankruptcy later that year. MARA acquired the site in January 2024 and has since expanded operations, increasing the scale of noise and local resistance.

“It’s not like truck traffic or city sounds.  It’s a low-frequency, persistent noise that’s particularly difficult to escape.”

Law Suit Against Texas Bitcoin Mining Firm

In October 2024, a group of Granbury residents filed a lawsuit against MARA, claiming that the continuous noise has caused “sensory, emotional, psychological, and health impacts,” including the aggravation of pre-existing medical conditions.

Some residents have also linked the noise to the death of livestock and recurring hospitalizations.

The controversy has erupted as MARA moves forward with major business plans. The company announced offering up to $1 billion in convertible senior notes, some of which would be used to purchase additional Bitcoin.

As of July 2025, MARA reportedly holds 50,000 BTC, valued at approximately $6 billion.

The situation in Granbury comes amid a broader political shift around cryptocurrency mining in the U.S.

In 2024, several crypto executives met with then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has since embraced Bitcoin mining in public speeches, including at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville.

However, the fallout from that support is beginning to show locally.

Granbury resident, when asked if he regretted voting for Trump, said “Concerning Bitcoin, yes!”

“I don’t have a problem with the industry. What I have a problem with is what it’s doing to people here. I think that’s being ignored.”

Although Congress is yet to pass federal legislation specific to crypto mining, last week US lawmakers advanced three bills addressing stablecoins, central bank digital currencies and the digital asset market structure.

Regardless, for the residents near the Texas Bitcoin Mining facility, the central issue remains: the neverending sound that they say has upended daily life.
