- Paraguayan President Santiago Peña’s account came under attack on Monday.
- The hacker seemed to be a phisher trying to profit from the incident and investigations are currently underway.
- President Peña’is the latest prominent figure to come under cyber attack.
The official X (formerly Twitter) account of Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was hacked on Monday to spread a fraudulent message. The post, written unusually in English rather than the President’s usual Spanish, claimed that Paraguay had adopted Bitcoin as legal tender.
Further, the now deleted post said that Paraguay had not only recognized Bitcoin as an official currency but had also created a $5 million BTC reserve and launched a new bond initiative for “crypto-enabled citizens.”
Moreover, in an apparent phishing scam the post urged users in the Republic to send any amount of Bitcoin to a wallet address.
The tone and language sharply contrasted with Peña’s typical communications raising immediate red flags and Cybersecurity experts and social media observers quickly flagged the post as suspicious.
Shortly after, X flagged the account for “irregular activity.”
The Paraguayan government responded swiftly. A post from the presidential account in Spanish confirmed the Bitcoin related announcement was a hoax.
However, the hacker reportedly attempted to hide this legitimate reply under the scam post, potentially misleading users who had not seen the correction.
Authorities have since launched an investigation into the breach. Paraguay’s national cybersecurity team is coordinating with X to restore control over the account and ensure its security.
In a recent X post President Santiago Peña thanked the @CERTpy team and X for their swift and professional handling of the hack.
President Peña’s account is the latest in a series of high profile takeovers used to spread digital asset misinformation.
The official Instagram account of hip-hop group Migos was hacked on Monday May 26, 2025, revealing very personal information of Solana co-founder Raj Gokal.
The incident highlights growing concerns over social media security and how compromised accounts can be weaponized to manipulate unsuspecting users.
