The sound of digital alarm bells is growing louder across the cryptocurrency world. As phishing attacks drain over $400 million from unsuspecting users in the first half of 2025, major wallet providers are finally fighting back together.
MetaMask has joined forces with Phantom, WalletConnect, and Backpack to launch a ground-breaking real-time phishing defence network through the Security Alliance (SEAL). The collaborative system creates what SEAL describes as a “decentralized immune system for crypto security,” enabling anyone worldwide to prevent major phishing attacks before they strike.
Fighting an Evolving Threat
The partnership tackles crypto drainers: sophisticated scammers who constantly change their tactics. These criminals use different websites, use offshore hosting, and employ cloaking techniques to evade detection.
“Drainers are a constant cat and mouse game,” explains Ohm Shah, MetaMask’s security researcher. The alliance allows wallet teams to respond more quickly and “effectively throw a wrench at the drainer’s infrastructure.”
The system operates through SEAL’s newly announced “verifiable phishing reports” tool, which lets security researchers prove malicious websites contain actual phishing content. Valid reports automatically trigger warnings across all participating wallets instantly, without requiring special permissions.
