- Polygon managed to launch its most complex upgrade since 2020 – the Heimdall upgrade which means transactions will complete in less than half a minute.
- Transaction finality refers to the reassurance that the transaction made on chain cannot be reversed, altered or cancelled.
Sandeep Nailwal, the co-founder of Polygon took to Twitter said that this upgrade,
“It’s more than just changing the engine of a multibillion-dollar airplane mid-flight, it’s like redesigning it in real time while keeping every passenger safe and on course.”’
Polygon plans to further increase its Transactions Per Second (TPS) to 5000, achieve instant finality, and connect to the AggLayer in the coming months. These developments aim to usher in a new era of aggregated blockchains.
Polygon’s Heimdall Upgrade
Polygon, one of the biggest layer 2 blockchains on the Ethereum network, carried out its most complex hard fork, Bhilai that led the chain to accomplish a TPS of 1000. Coupled with upgrade, the Heimdall upgrade essentially reduces the time to complete consensus on the chain and reorg synchronization. In blockchain, regorganizing of blocks essentially means that the chain identifies the longest chain. Usually network latency happens because of slow depth of orgs.
The success of such a complex release underscores Polygon’s technical competence and commitment to its community, promising continued aggressive development and improvements.
Polygon’s successful roll out was a testament to the diligent co-ordination across major stakeholders, including Polygon’s internal teams, validators, RPC providers, dApps, and client developers.
Despite a challenging migration process that required round-the-clock efforts to triage and fix issues on the fly, no major reorganizations (reorgs) occurred, demonstrating the robustness of the execution and the strength of the decentralized network’s coordination.
This also means a significantly reduced chance and depth of future reorgs, creating a more reliable environment for users and applications.
Polygon Leading The RWA Revolution
The chain’s recent upgrades will lead it to become the leading platform for real world asset tokenization and payments.
Polygon clocked transactions worth $1B in 2025 alone along with stablecoin supply worth $2.7B.
