Reading Prerequisites:
  • Brave is a privacy-first browser that automatically blocks most ads, cookies, and trackers by default.
  • Brave currently holds a 1% share of the browser market with over 85 million monthly active users.
  • The new domain is now a non-fungible token (NFT) on the Polygon blockchain.

Brave became the first major web browser to launch a native onchain domain by introducing the “.brave” top-level domain in partnership with Unstoppable Domains.

The new domain is minted as a non-fungible token (NFT) on the Polygon blockchain and allows users to replace complex cryptocurrency wallet addresses with simple, human-readable names.

Contrary to traditional domains, .brave domains are user-owned and do not require renewal fees.

They also support multi-network resolution across Sonic, Solana, Ethereum, Base, and Bitcoin.

Brian Bondy, Brave’s CTO and co-founder noted that users can also host decentralized websites on the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), with native support in the Brave browser.

.brave’ is more than a domain — it’s a user-owned identity layer, native to the Brave ecosystem.

Although blockchain-based domains face compatibility challenges with traditional browsers, Brave and Unstoppable Domains plan to seek ICANN approval for a general top domain to enable broader adoption.

Brave currently has 85 million active users monthly; although considered a niche among mainstream browsers like Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox.
