In the days following a deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, several cryptocurrency companies said they would provide financial support. According to local authorities, the fire was among the most serious residential incidents in Hong Kong in recent decades and led to several deaths and injuries.
After the incident, several crypto exchanges and blockchain companies said they would provide donations to help residents affected by the fire and support rebuilding. Based on figures shared publicly, total pledges from the sector exceed US $3.2 million, or around HK $24.78 million.
The incident attracted attention outside Hong Kong. In response, different crypto groups and organizations said they would contribute to both immediate relief efforts and longer-term recovery for families impacted by the fire.
Major Crypto Contributions
Several crypto platforms confirmed donations after the fire.
Bitget said it would provide US $1.5 million. The company said the funds would be used for reconstruction work, emergency supplies, and direct assistance to affected families.
Binance announced a separate pledge of US $1.28 million. According to the company, the money is intended for immediate relief and community rebuilding efforts.
KuCoin said it would contribute about US $256,000. The company stated that the funds would support emergency response efforts alongside local authorities.
Animoca Brands also launched a token-based donation initiative. In addition, other Web3 figures, including Justin Sun, were reported to have pledged further support.
Together, these donations bring total crypto-related pledges to more than US $3.2 million.
The Significance of Crypto-Led Relief
Some companies involved said crypto-based donations allow funds to be transferred quickly. Funds can be transferred across borders without going through traditional banking systems, which can take time during emergencies.
Another reason mentioned was visibility. Blockchain transactions are public, which means donations can be followed as they move, making it easier to see where the money goes.
Crypto-based donations have also been used in earlier emergencies. In places such as Thailand and Myanmar, similar efforts were used to support medical care and rebuilding after disasters.
Distribution and Oversight
The donated funds are expected to be distributed through local charities and relief organizations. Companies involved said they plan to work with established groups on the ground.
According to statements, the funds will be used for emergency relief, medical care, temporary housing, psychological support, and longer-term reconstruction. Several exchanges said they would monitor how donations are used.
Future Impact
At this stage, attention remains on helping people affected by the fire and providing temporary shelter and basic support. It is still too soon to say what effect the donations will have over the longer term.
The fire at Wang Fuk Court raised concerns about safety in crowded residential buildings. It also drew attention to how crypto companies and blockchain groups react during emergency situations.
As recovery continues, the actions taken by the crypto sector may influence how similar support is handled in future situations.
