The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will launch a “Government Blockchain Academy” in 2026. It aims to equip governments with expertise in blockchain and AI technologies.
UNDP believes the initiative will drive economic growth and address critical development challenges.
The UN Agency is dedicated to combating poverty across the globe.
What does the Government Blockchain Academy entail?
The academy launches in partnership with the Exponential Science Foundation, a nonprofit advocating for blockchain and AI.
UNDP says it will “harness blockchain, AI, and other emerging technologies to help governments drive transformative change”.
The academy will prioritize deploying blockchain solutions to enhance access to financial services, digital payments, and trusted digital credentials.
Additionally, it will also educate governments on using blockchain for tamper-resistant recordkeeping to combat corruption.
UNDP believes it will improve public procurement processes, and support climate finance through tools like tokenization and smart contracts.
Irena Cerovic, UNDP team leader for Europe and Central Asia, emphasized the academy will enable countries to “tackle complex development challenges in new ways”
“This will help countries move from experimentation to implementation with a focus on transparency, inclusion, and resilience”, she said.
The UNDP plans to begin curriculum design this year, with the academy rolling out in select countries starting in 2026.
The program will offer in-person, online, and forum-based training. It will provide governments with structured support for high impact blockchain initiatives aligned with national priorities.
UNDP also launched a blockchain academy in 2023, in collaboration with the Algorand Foundation. This initiative trained 22,000 staff members to leverage blockchain for sustainable growth.
