Cryptocurrency News Flash from Africa: Kenya’s Bitcoin ATMs Spark Instant Regulatory Drama
The cryptocurrency news out of Kenya is nothing short of chaotic brilliance.
A couple of days after Kenya launched their Virtual Assets Service Providers (VASP) Act of 2025, new Bitcoin ATMs have popped up in Nairobi’s busiest malls raising alarms; mostly because regulators say these ATM’s are not licensed.
The “Bankless Bitcoin” machines appear alongside regular bank ATMs, apparently offering lightning-fast cash-to-crypto swaps, far quicker than regulators anticipated.
However, the Kenyan Central Bank and Capital Markets Authority (CMA) joined together to say “Currently, CBK and CMA have not licensed any VASPs under the Act to operate in or from Kenya.”
