Alex Bores who serves as a New York state lawmaker and runs for Congress has introduced a new proposal which protects employees from the disruptive effects of artificial intelligence technology. Bores presented his AI Dividend program through an X post which will deliver direct payments to Americans when AI technology results in major job losses. The plan is part of his broader campaign platform as he runs for a seat in Congress.
The proposal serves as a Bores initiative to establish an economic system which will protect US workers against future automation-driven industrial job losses. The American public should receive benefits from AI technology which enables businesses to achieve higher productivity while accumulating more wealth according to his statement.
Plan links AI growth to direct payments for citizens
The AI Dividend would be funded through several mechanisms, including taxes on AI-driven activities, potential equity stakes in leading technology firms, and broader tax reforms affecting how labor and capital are treated. The proposal directs funds to two purposes, which include direct payment distribution and financial support for job transition programs and educational and workforce training programs. The plan also includes building stronger oversight and safety systems around AI development.
Concerns about how automation will affect jobs led to the development of this concept. A recent report by Goldman Sachs estimated that AI adoption has contributed to the loss of around 16,000 jobs per month over the past year. Multiple technology companies such as Amazon Meta and Intel and Microsoft have implemented workforce reductions while planning future layoffs because they are increasing their investments in artificial intelligence.
Different analysts show disagreement about how dangerous the threat stands. Morgan Stanley said in a recent report that the impact of AI on the labor market has been “modest so far.” The firm found that existing technological advancements will lead to job loss but new employment possibilities will emerge as time progresses.
Morgan Stanley accepted that AI might develop into an advanced technology that differs from previous innovations because it will change how people work in various fields. Political backing and the results of Bores’ congressional campaign will determine the future course of his proposal.
