Visa Bets on Blockchain Privacy as It Joins The Canton Network

Visa joins Canton Network as validator, pushing blockchain banking forward.

The company behind your credit card just made a major move into the future of banking, and it could reshape how money moves across the globe.

Visa has joined the Canton Network as a Super Validator. It is the first major international payments company to do so for Canton. A super validator monitors the network and verifies that transactions are legit. Visa becomes one of only 40 such validators for Canton. These 40 are an exclusive club of institutions trusted enough to help govern how the network operates.

The Canton Network, co-created by Digital Asset, runs as a public blockchain built specifically for regulated financial institutions. Unlike mainstream networks such as Ethereum or Solana, Canton builds privacy into its core, letting institutions share infrastructure without ever putting sensitive customer or business data at risk.

A Leader of Global Finance

Canton is no small operation. It launched in 2023 with a founding group of over 30 institutions—Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, Deutsche Börse, Microsoft, Moody’s, Cboe, Deloitte, and Paxos among them. The network has not looked back since. Today, close to 400 participants operate on it, including DTCC, Euroclear, BNY, and a string of other heavyweight names from global finance.

One of Canton’s most telling proof points is Broadridge, the Wall Street fintech firm that moved its distributed ledger repo platform to Canton in 2023 and has run all its repo transactions through the network ever since.

DTCC has also picked Canton as its tokenization partner, working to bring a portion of U.S. Treasury securities onto the network. HSBC joined the Canton Foundation as a governance participant in September 2025. And Digital Asset, the firm behind Canton, pulled in $135 million in fresh funding in June 2025, backed by DRW Venture Capital and Tradeweb Markets, earmarked for pulling hundreds of billions in real-world assets onto the platform.

Bridging Capital Markets and Payments

Canton already has a firm grip on capital markets. Visa’s arrival now pulls payments into that same ecosystem, widening the network’s reach considerably. Banks can now begin testing stablecoin payments, settlements, and treasury functions without tearing up their existing risk management or compliance setups.

Rubail Birwadker, Visa’s Global Head of Growth Products and Strategic Partnerships, stated that many banks have considered the lack of privacy as a major obstacle to moving serious activity onto blockchain. “We’re bringing Visa-grade trust, governance, and operational rigor to privacy-preserving blockchain infrastructure so regulated financial institutions can bring payments on-chain without having to rethink how they operate,” said Birwadker.

Eric Saraniecki, Head of Network Strategy at Digital Asset, referred to Visa’s entry as a significant milestone. The technology, he argued, has left the experimentation phase behind, and it now sits firmly in production-ready territory, where transactions move at blockchain speed while staying private, secure, and within regulatory bounds.

For Visa, the move to work with Canton is as much about staying relevant as it is about innovation. As blockchain quietly transforms the infrastructure of global finance, the world’s largest payments network has chosen to actively participate in its development rather than passively observe.
